Pieces of  seaweed obtained by the grinding and crushing of dried seaweed are incorporated in natural seaweed based products such as soap bars and shampoos. Though these products don't use extracts as such, they will also be dealt with.

Seaweed, extracts and other substances derived from the sea, e.g. Dead Sea mud, Maerl are believed by cosmetic companies to be vital elements which act in harmony with the human body, helping to achieve health, beauty and relaxation.

Because seaweed is rich in nutrients it has also therapeutic properties and can be used to

alleviate aesthetic disorders in general: dry skin aggravated by dry atmosphere, a sensitive and reactive epidermis, cellulite etc. but in addition also 'natural products' and 'alternative medicines' able to alleviate nonaesthetic disorders as well. The unifying factor, however, is that cosmetics cannot be claimed to have medicinal value as they have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration Board in the USA, nor carry the stamp of approval of the Medical Research Council.

The active substances (compounds) are derived from the cytoplasm or cell walls of seaweed cells and are not pieces of seaweed tissue. These Pieces of  seaweed can be obtained after the grinding and crushing of dried seaweed.

Macro-Algae seaweed or sea vegetables have unlike there earthly cousins no roots, leaves, seeds, flowers or vascular systems. They nourish themselves through osmosis attracting gases and nutrients dissolved in the watery environment that is their home. Because of the lack of a vascular system the minerals in seaweeds are in colloidal form, meaning they retain their molecular identity while in liquid suspension. Able to pass not only between the different cell but through the cell wall as well including skin tisue. These colloids are not only very small in size and are easily absorbed by body’s cells.
Other“ Minerals that are attached to organic substances such as amino acids are also more bio available. These are call chelated (key-lated) minerals, from the Greek word for claw.
As a result ,seaweed is packed with easy-to-absorb proteins, vitamins, minerals and lipids, it can protect against environmental pollution and even ward off aging. The nutrients pass through your tissue and enter isolated places in your body where no other nutrients can go.

Beneficial effects on cellular repair, cellular growth and regeneration which have let many to believe that seaweed can lessen the signs of ageing. Additional these colloids/minerals and nutrients can enter your body through the skin, helping to increase the (micro) circulation, which has a positive effect on local fatty overloads and helps maintain the tone of the tissue. To firm the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite!
Scientific research also indicates that seaweed’s ability to increase micro circulation and the metabolism promotes detoxification and enhances slimming and weight loss.

Additionally, these  negatively charged substances can be guided though small electric field and currents present in the human body.

Species not used at present but which are being examined for their potential included Laminaria saccharina, Himanthalia elongata, certain other species of Porphyra, Palmaria palmata,Delesseria sanguinea, and species of Enteromorpha and Ulva .

In cosmetology (the study of cosmetics), the whole alga is rarely used, but now more and more. It is important to know the biochemical composition and potential for use in cosmetics of extracted material, whether it is a mash, a paste-like mixture of undifferentiated material, or an extract.  Extracts can be used in cosmetics in two ways: either as an agent in the preparation of products (as a stabiliser or emulsifier as examples), or as the therapeutic agent itself.  Refer to the following sections:
